<물방울의 방 1972~1983>은 김창열 화백 기증 컬렉션 220점 가운데 물방울 회화의 형성과 변화 과정을 확인할 수 있는 1972년에서 1983년까지 작품세계를 조명하는 전시이다. 전시명 ‘물방울의 방’은 16세기 이후 유럽 귀족들이 세계 각지에서 발견한 진귀한 물건들을 보관했던 수장고이자 개인 뮤지엄을 의미하는 용어 ‘호기심의 방(Cabinet of Curiosities)’에서 따온 제목이다. 김창열은 1970년대 초반 이후 50여년 동안 구도자의 수행에 가까운 태도로 창작에 임했으며 현실과 관념, 형상과 추상의 영역을 넘나들며 독자적인 물방울 예술을 구축한다. 1972년에서 1983년까지 물방울 회화는 그러한 고민과 치열함으로 점철된 조형적 여정의 정수를 보여준다.

‘The Cabinet of Water Drops 1972-1983' presents the highlights of the 220 works donated by artist Kim Tschang-yeul, showing the creation and transformation of water drop paintings from 1972 to 1983. The title of the exhibition, "The Cabinet of Water Drops," is taken from the term "cabinet of curiosities," which refers to a storeroom and private museum where European aristocrats kept rare objects from around the world since the 16th century.

For more than fifty years, Kim approached his creative life with the attitude of a seeker. He built his own world, moving between the realms of reality and concept, figuration and abstraction. The water droplet paintings from 1972 to 1983 show the essence of his formative journey, which was characterized by such concern and intensity.
